How To Compare Umbrella Samples

Two umbrellas can look very similar in photos, but in person can look and feel completely different.  We always recommend getting samples to compare them if you can.  There is no substitute for feeling it and using it in person...the quality differences are much clearer.  When you get the samples, here are the items you should look closely at:

FABRIC

• How does the fabric feel?  Soft and thick?  Or plastic-like and stiff?  The fabric is a big part of how people judge an umbrella - will your customers think it looks/feels cheap or premium?

HARDWARE

• What does the cap look like on the top end (opposite end from the handle) of the umbrella?  Does it look cheap and like it will easily come detached or break?  Or does it look high quality and sturdy?  Wiggle it around a bit to see if it comes off.
• What do the tips look like on the ends of the ribs?  Do they match the other hardware or the shaft of the umbrella?  How well are they attached to the fabric (sewing)? 
• What does the auto open button look like (if the umbrella has auto open)?  Does it look cheap and like it will easily come detached or break?  Or does it look high quality and durable?  Press it a number of times to test it and see if it is smooth or sticky

RIBS

• What are the ribs made of? If they are metal, are they bare metal or do they have powder-coating on them?  Bare metal will rust very easily.
• Are the ribs solid or are they U-shaped (which is not as strong and prone to bending)?  Try bending them a bit to see if they bounce back to regular shape or if they buckle.

HANDLE

• How does the handle feel/look?  The handle is a large part of how people judge an umbrella.  What will your customers' impression be of it - cheap or  premium?
